Architect Name:

Project Name:
3-gen House
Company Name:
Architects 49 (Chiang Mai) Limited
Project Location:
Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Project Description:
Located on the banks of the Ping River, the surrounding area retains the traditional riverside community layout, where fences serve merely to mark property boundaries, often using tree lines and avoiding fences along the riverside. This inspired the layout of the house. The house layout follows a design where buildings encircle a central courtyard on all four sides, creating privacy and security from the outside world. Multiple buildings are connected by verandas with exterior walls and internal doorways to create a safe and private central courtyard, while respecting the local context. This design harmonizes with the open riverside area and uses tree lines as boundaries, blending seamlessly with the community. The main material of the house is old wood, reclaimed from several other buildings, chosen for its low expansion and contraction rates. Surplus wood from architectural work has been repurposed for furniture. The designers also required door and window systems that meet high standards and offer long-term durability with minimal maintenance.
